The spectrum of meningococcal infection ranges from asymptomatic carriage in the nasopharynx to fulminant septic shock, which can result in death within a few hours of symptom onset. Classical meningococcal septicemia is one of the most recognizable clinical syndromes, with fever and widespread purpura, often in the presence of shock.
