Emilia Skirmuntt
BSc MSc MSc DPhil
Postdoctoral Research Scientist
- Dr Emilia Skirmuntt is an evolutionary virologist and her scientific interests involve building an understanding of genome and virus evolution, including the co-evolution of viruses and their hosts. She is also interested in zoonotic viral diseases, their epidemiology and immunology standing behind their success or failure during infection. She is proficient in both wet lab techniques and in-silico methods.
Bio
Emilia's previous projects involved the investigation of virus-like genes and host-virus co-evolution in bats, which are known to be one of the major sources of viral infections spread amongst humans and other animals. Before starting her doctoral work, she practised privately as a bio-analyst in London. Emilia holds two Master’s degrees: one in Biomedical sciences (University of Westminster) where she worked on tropical viral diseases, and second in Forensic Medical Sciences (Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry) where she worked on a project in toxicology. She completed BSc in Animal Breeding and Genetics in 2005 at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. Since the beginning of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic she helps as a science communicator for media and the public.
