Last month, Professor Teresa Lambe OBE, the Calleva Head of Vaccine Immunology and Professor of Vaccinology & Immunology at the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford, delivered an inspiring speech at the University of Notre Dame’s Graduate School’s annual Commencement Ceremony.

Alongside delivering the commencement address, Professor Lambe was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the 180th University Commencement Ceremony. She is celebrated for her role in the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine programme, which saved over 6 million lives in 2021.

In Professor Lambe’s speech, she draws on her upbringing in Ireland, her experiences adapting to new cultures, and her journey in science, reflecting on the importance of collaboration and the courage to enter a world that is as uncertain as it is exciting.

“You can have what matters most to you, but that takes clarity, choice and, sometimes, sacrifice… Purpose needs focus. It needs fire. It needs you to choose — again and again — to walk toward what you value, what you hold dear, not just what is offered.”

Professor Lambe also reminds the graduates of the need for people in this world who are not afraid to lead but are just as willing to listen and act with purpose. Describing how all of this is embodied in the students, alumni and staff at Notre Dame, she praises their spirit of grit, purpose, and compassion and leaves the graduates with five pieces of invaluable advice at the end of her commencement speech:

  1. Ask better questions - the answers will follow.
  2. Be proud of your quirks - they may be your greatest strength.
  3. Collaborate often - solo heroes are for movies.
  4. Own your identity - but don’t let it cage you.
  5. Make decisions deliberately - and take responsibility for them.
